1F#10 SAMUEL EZRA DUDLEY...1F#11 MARY CATHERINE HILLYER

1F#5 Effie Drucilla Dudley's parents were 1F#10 Samuel Ezra Dudley and 1F#11 Mary Catherine Hillyer.

Samuel, also known as "Simon," was born 2 February, 1853 in the Mt. Zion church community, Buffalo Township in Noble County, Ohio. He was the third of fourteen children of Virginia parents, all coal miners, who worked the shaft and drift mines around Glenwood and Pleasant City, Ohio.

On 13 January, 1875 Samuel was married to Mary Catherine Hillyer by Justice of the Peace J. M. Rainie of Guernsey County. By 15 September, 1896, with eleven children to look after, Mary managed to buy the family's new home from John and Nancy Andress for fifty dollars, on the Glenwood Coal Company site on what is now State Route 821. By the first of April, 1913, now with fourteen children, Mary and Samuel sold a portion of the property, lot no. 1, to J. B. Sanford for $300.

Samuel died at 2:00 A.M. on 11 October, 1929 at age 76 years, 8 months and 9 days, pronounced dead by family physician Dr. D. F. Wallenfelsz of Pleasant City. Samuel was interred in Pleasant City Cemetery in, at this writing, an unmarked grave. Daughter Florence Marie Gregg would eventually lie two graves to the right of his, with her own headstone. Samuel died of "chronic bronchitis and asthma" -- most likely Black Lung Disease.

1F#11 Mary Catherine Hillyer -- a surname variously spelled Hillyar, Hellyer, even Hilliard -- was born 13 August, 1855 in Noble County, to Thomas Hellyer and Rachel Secrest. Mary was said to be a second cousin to Samuel Ezra, whose mother was Delilah Secrest. Rachel's grandparents and Delilah's great-grandparents were Henry and Anna Maria Secrest. In point of fact, Mary and Samuel were second-cousins-once-removed.

Mary Catherine died on 10 March, 1930 of a stroke, at 8:30 in the evening. She was attended by Dr. Wallenfelsz, interred at Pleasant City Cemetery beside her husband Samuel, to the right of his grave. Her grave, too, is unmarked. Daughter Florence Gregg would later lie on her other side. Mary Catherine lived 74 years, 6 months and 27 days. Her home was passed on to her surviving children. Mary and Samuel's children were:
